Sunday is Grandparents’ Day

I love that Grandparents are honored on a special day each year.

Grandparents fill many roles in their grandchildren’s lives. I am grateful for the relationship I had with my four grandparents. They were very special people in my life. I have so many fond memories and learned so much from them.

I never felt parented by my grandparents. Oh, they certainly loved me enough to have me follow the rules of the house and they cared enough about me to teach me how to be a positive person in life yet I never felt they overrode my parents beliefs, values or guidelines.

I loved spending TIME with my grandparents and was blessed and thankful to have shared some of my children with them. I love the pictures of my grandparents and my children together.

As I began to have grandchildren of my own, I certainly thought about how my grandparents treated me and interacted with my parents. The full on support they provided to my parents, not just physically and emotionally but spiritually as well. My grandparents prayed heartily for their children and grandchildren. I purposefully work to take on that same role with my own children and grandchildren.

As a grandparent, our children and grandchildren hear us say repeatedly,

“Do what your mom and dad say.”

We want our adult children to know they are supported by us in our role as grandparents. We want our grandchildren to know that we support their mom and dad.

We have raised our children, they are amazing people. It is a blessing to be a part of all these lives.

So on this celebration of grandparents, find ways to support your grandchildren through supporting your adult children, their parents.
