Happy Fourth of July

Today, we celebrate the independence of our country. This holiday commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1976. This document declared our separation from British rule and is truly the birthday of the United States of America. At the time of the signing we were only thirteen colonies. TIME does change some things!!

As we celebrate with bar-b-que’s and fireworks, remember there was conflict and arguments amongst those writing and voting on the Declaration of Independence. There was comradery and compromise and finally a beautiful document that we still hold dear in our country. Share this history with your children. Encourage them to understand the significance of this event in our American history.

Did you know?

John Adams believed that July 2nd was the correct date on which to celebrate the birth of American independence, and would reportedly turn down invitations to appear at July 4th events in protest. Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826—the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
